Change of Web Address and Shop Location....Again!

Well the Jack Dennis guide service email has changed once again and the shop will have a new location this summer. The new web address is www.jackdennisfishingtrips.com and the new location is to be determined. If you go to www.jackdennis.com nowadays it will redirect you to the Jack Dennis Sporting Goods website. I'll let everyone know the new shop location once everything gets sorted out this winter.
On a lighter note, the skiing here has been pretty epic as of recent. We've gotten pounded by a couple major storms and everything has filled in nicely. Hopefully, if you're a skier, you'll be able to make it out this year.

My girlfriend flew into town this weekend and I convinced her to go out and do some fishing with me. We took the dog and my buddy Greg with us and ended up having a really good day. It was nice and sunny but pretty darn windy when we got to the river. This made for tough casting conditions, but the fish were on the feed so all was good. We landed good numbers of decent sized fish, no real monsters, and got into some neat sight nymphing situations. Here are a few pictures from the trip; we had to get a little creative when hauling the boat out though. The ramp was too icy to back down so I had to hookup and old climbing rope to drag the boat up the ramp.
Right now we're getting one heck of a winter storm here in Jackson. The system has dumped 3 feet in less than 48hrs and is still going. That will probably turn off the fishing here but at least we've been getting in some good skiing. I'll try and report on the skiing again here before too long.

January Fishing?

Fishing in January is not something that we are accustomed to in Jackson, but with the lack of snow we've had this year a number of boat ramps are still open. Yesterday a couple buddies and I thought we'd skip the skiing and go fishing. The fishing turned out to be excellent even thought the weather was cloudy and cold. It was pretty much all nymph fishing but the fish were active and in great condition. One of the browns I caught actually jumped a couple of times which is pretty unusual in the middle of winter. Hopefully we get some more snow here but if we don't at least we'll have some good fishing.

New Year

Happy Holidays to everyone! I hope everyone had a good new year. I personally did not get to do any fishing or skiing, but I did do a lot of family related traveling. The skiing is finally starting to get a little better around here. We just had a storm roll through and dump 3 feet of snow on us. This has helped to improve the skiing, but has made the avalanche conditions extremely dangerous.
Here are a few pictures from the flight back up to Jackson. I've flown into a lot of different airports around the world but I have to say that Jackson's has to be one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. I took some pictures of the Tetons, one of the snake river, one of Jackson Lake, and one of a special little fishing location that I like to go to in the summer. If you can figure out what piece of water this picture shows you can find some big browns that hardly ever see any pressure.
Hopefully I'll get some more skiing and fishing in here soon and will be able to post a little more often.

Ski Season

Ski season is here in Jackson. I doubt I'll be doing a whole lot of fishing for the next month or two here. I'll try and keep posting some skiing picks here in the future and hopefully in a few months I'll be back to fishing. Here are a few pictures and videos of my time teaching my dog to ski. He's getting the hang of it but he still has alot to learn.

Winter has arrived in the area. Fishing has slowed down overall, but there is still some good fishing to be had in the right places at the right times. I was down in Colorado a few weeks ago and ran into some nasty weather but some good fishing. My dad and I had some great streamer fishing with some big fish being caught. Most of the fish were in the shallows in one to two feet of water. We also had an excellent baetis hatch during the day that provided some great dry fly fishing. Hopefully I'll get a few more good days in here this year before the ski season starts.

I went down to do some camping with the girlfriend here a couple weeks ago. We met halfway between here and Denver to do some camping on the North Platte River. This wasn't a fishing specific trip, but I did manage to get some fishing in while I was there. The fishing was quite good, with lots of fish caught on nymphs and some nice fish caught on streamers. Overall it was a great trip with some good fishing.

Sorry for the lapse in posts, I've been very busy between teaching school and going back to college. I've fished/guided some around the area and went up to Montana for a few days, a couple weeks ago. The fishing in this area has been very good with excellent dry fly action during the middle of the day. They've recently started dropping the water levels to winter flows around here... I'll let you know what that does to the fishing in the area. Its getting into big brown trout time around here.

School has started at this point so I'll only be guiding on the weekends from here on out. I've guided the past two days on the snake and did have some time to finally fish on my own. The fishing has been excellent with big dries working early and PMD's coming off in the late morning. Streamers are working on cloudy days, but are certainly slower during the sunny times of day. Here are a few fish from recent days, one of the cutties was actually over 20inches but doesn't look like it in the pictures.

Fishing has picked up in the area recently. The Snake is fishing very well with dries, both small and large, and we're seeing some good fish up top. The South fork, unfortunately, is still a nymphing game and I'm skeptical that it will ever fish well with dries this year. The green is still fishing, but its a super early morning fishery that will shut down by noon or one. I'll try and keep up the posting after the school year starts here. I hope everyone is having a good year. It should be a great fall!

Fishing has taken a drastically positive turn in the past week. The Snake has started to clear and is fishing well with dry flies, the Green continues to fish well, and the South Fork is fishing much better than it has been. I just got back from a trip on the upper South Fork and the fishing was better than expected. It was all nymphs and streamers but the water levels looked good and the visibility was more than enough. When the bugs get going, that place it going to explode! Here are some pictures from a few days I fished with the Lenzen group, some good guys who are fun to fish with.

It's amazing that August is already here and the fishing season is just getting started. We've had some good fishing in the area with the best fishing coming in the early hours of the day or under cloudy skies. Streamers have worked well along with good hatches of gray drakes, PMDs, and yellow sallies. The south fork currently remains off color even with the water finally stabilizing. Hopefully it will begin to shape up here a little later in the week. Flat Creek just opened up today and should be fishing well. I have a trip there tomorrow so I'll have a better idea of the fishing conditions shortly. Here are a few pictures from some recent trips in the area.

What can I say... the fishing here is still poor and the water is still high. The South Fork had been fishing until recently when they bumped the flows from 17,000cfs to 25,000cfs in one day. At these flows its borderline unsafe to even float the river. The good news is that, even though the flows are high, they do seem to have peaked and are finally starting to come down. Hopefully at least the Green and the Salt will be fishing here shortly.
A buddy and I took a few days this past week to go up to montana and fish. We fished the Beaverhead for two days and had some decent fishing, but the river was pretty darn crowded. I guess that's to be expected when its the only clean water in the area. Here are a few pictures from the trip.

Gros Ventre

Here's a picture of a big cutthroat I caught this April up on the Gros Ventre river. This fish measured a fat 22 inches and came up out of a deep hole to eat a streamer. This is the biggest fish I think I've ever landed out of the Gros Ventre and was a good start to the season.

Lake Fishing

Well its been more lake fishing so far this year. Most of our rivers are still dirty so lakes seem to have been the best options. A buddy and I went up to a lake here in the Gros Ventre range this past week. This lake is only about 40-50 miles from Jackson but takes over 1.5 hrs to get to because of the "road", if you can call it a road, conditions. When we got within about 50 yards of the lake we encountered a huge downed tree that blocked the road. We had to move some big boulders and off-road it around the tree just to get the boat in the water. After all this work we were fortunately rewarded with some good fishing. Nothing lights out, but some consistent fishing for some fat cutties in the 15-19 inch range. They all ate either scud patterns or buggers stripped within 10 ft of the surface. The word is that the South Fork is starting to fish here so I may head over and check that out tomorrow to see what's happening.

Not a whole lot of new information to report. We've had warmer weather recently but still alot of rain. Most of the rivers in the area are high and dirty but it should start to stabilize a little more shortly. I'm done working at the school on wednesday here so hopefully I'll be able to fit in a few longer fishing trips in the next few weeks. Until it starts to clear I'll be spending most of my time on the lakes.

We spent the past weekend fishing up on Hebgen Lake in Montana. The fishing was good but the weather was terrible. On our second day it snowed between three and four inches on us. Hopefully summer gets here soon.

Finally! We were fortunate to have some good fishing weather this weekend. I managed to get out with some friends and had a pretty good day throwing streamers for some big fish. We were on a pretty low fish density stretch of water but managed 10 fish in the boat including one brown that measured just over 20 inches and one that was 21 inches. Not bad for early May.

Well I spent two weeks over spring break down in Baja chasing roosterfish again. Unfortunately the water was unbelievably cold for this time of year and the fish really weren't around yet. We did see a few roosters but they were all too busy spawning. We were fortunate to see lots of other wildlife on the trip. We got to see breaching whales, Orcas, Dolphins, Sea Turtles, Manta rays, and a huge group of spawning and jumping bat rays that we were able to row our kayaks out to. With the fishing being so bad we decided to turn to plan B and go surfing for the rest of the time.
Since coming back to Jackson the weather has gotten warmer but the snow has continued to come. The skiing has been great but I can't tell you how ready I am for summer. I'm heading over to Idaho today to get my boat so hopefully I'll be fishing here before too long.

It seems like its been snowing everyday and even though I'm only skiing a few days a week this year, everyday seems to be better than the last. Winter Has Arrived!

It has been snowing nonstop here for the past few weeks. Jackson Hole Mountain opened 100% of its terrain on opening day for the first time ever in November this year. I guess this was to be expected since this is the first year I'll be teaching out here and not working in a ski shop. No more skiing 100 days in a year for me.
In the meantime its safe to say that the fishing is done for this season. Skiing will be the name of the game here for awhile with the exception of a few fishing travel trips here and there. I'll try and keep posting on the skiing in the area and I'll put up some pictures and video when I get the chance.

Well my fishing season is pretty much over. The weather in the area has taken a turn for the worse and I've put my boat into storage over in Idaho. My last weekend was spent fishing the North platte with my dad. The fishing was decent and my dad did stick a pig brown on a streamer but we ended up losing it. Bummer! I'll probably be taking a few fishing trips this winter. I'm trying to go to the british virgin islands over christmas and I might be back in baja again this spring. I'll keep the posts going over the off season and I'll throw up some ski pictures. I hope you all have a good holiday season coming up here and enjoy the time with your families.

Weather in the area has taken a turn for the worst here in the past week or so. We had a serious winter storm roll through this past week that deposited 48inches of snow in the tetons. Despite this weather, fishing has continued to be good when the weather is right. Recent trips to the south fork have been decent, with only a few fish being caught but the average size being excellent and many of the fish still eating dry flies. Here are some pics from the past week or so.

Fishing with dad

I spent the weekend of October 9th fishing with my dad. He drove up and we did some fishing in the jackson area. The weather was rainy and nasty on saturday but the fishing was pretty good with a solid baetis hatch coming off. Most fish came on nymphs but a number of the fish ate smaller dry flies in the riffles. The second day was sunny and beautiful with the fishing being excellent early in the day and a little slower later in the day. The fish were eating dries but were tucked amazingly far up into cover. We did manage some good fish on baetis and hopper patterns though. It was a great trip overall and it was nice to do some fishing with my dad.

Great Fall Weather

The weather has been wonderful up here recently. I found a new place to fish over this past week... it doesn't have many fish but it does have some really big fish. Greg, Brad, and I spent two days over there and caught some pigs. The big rainbow in the picture weighed in at 5.5 pounds and wasn't even the biggest fish we caught. Greg managed to catch the biggest cutthroat trout I've ever seen but dropped it as we were getting ready to take some pictures. I didn't get accurate measurements but on the net measurements it looked like about 27 inches and extremely fat. It was all streamer fishing but there were some decent hatches of baetis and tricos around midday. I hope you are all enjoying the great fall weather where ever you are.

Fishing has been fantastic up here recently. The fall bugs are rally starting to come out and they're dropping the water levels toward their winter flows. This tends to concentrate the fish and can make for some great days. I've had a number of good days on the snake with clients the past couple of weekends and we've done well both days with a good number of large cutties being caught, almost entirely on dries. I Did have a day with some buddies over on the south fork this past weekend and it was good fishing. They changed the water on us that day so there was a pretty good lull in the midday fishing but the morning and evening was very good with all of our fish being caught on small dry flies. Fall is here

Fall has officially reached the valley! Nightime lows have been dipping into the lower thirties and upper twenties every night, but the daytime highs have still been very pleasent with temps in the 70's most days. This cold weather snap has really usherd in the fall hatches and has kicked the dry fly fishing into full swing. We've got great hatches of september stones, mahogany duns, and snake drakes this time of year. Our fishing tends to be best midday but we do pickup some good fish early in the morning.
Here are a few pictures my dad sent me recently... one is of a 10.4lb rainbow he caught in colorado over the weekend. He caught this fish on a size 16 ant in a pond a few hours from boulder. I'm very proud of him because he normally loses all the big trout he hooks. He finally got a big one after all the years we've spent hooking and losing big fish. The other pictures are from my dad of the forest fire near Boulder, CO. This fire is getting pretty large and has made for some pretty impressive photos. Hope you enjoy.

I just recently accepted a job with the Teton County School District as a special education paraprofessional. This means that as of August 25th I will be unavailable to guide during the week, but will still be available on weekends. I'm very excited about this new job position but I still love guiding and plan to continue to guide during the summers. I've spent the past few days guiding and doing some fishing on my own. A buddy and I just did a quick little fishing trip here in the valley and caught alot of nice cutties rising to PMD's and some eating PMD nymphs right below the surface. With the current temperatures , Fall should be coming to the valley soon and this should kick of some great stonefly and mahogany hatches.

Fishing has continued to be excellent this past week. The bite has turned into more of a morning bite with it tapering off a little bit in the late afternoon. This may change though with a recent cold snap we've experienced. I've been guiding primarily on the snake in the park and most of our fish have been coming on a variety of dry flies. Very little nymphing this time of year. I'll be on the South Fork tomorrow so I'll let you know how that goes. Here are a few pictures from the past week.

Well fishing on the snake is really picking up, the south fork is slowing down a little bit, and a number of our other rivers are fishing well. The snake in the national park seems to be the place to be right. The big fish are showing up with increasing frequency and the dry fly fishing has been excellent. I did have a trip on the south fork on Aug 2nd and it was good but just not up to the level that it was in mid july. The pmd's were still around but not in full force. Here are a few pictures from the past week.

Flat Creek Opener

Check out this pig that my client Bob Barone caught on a big dry fly on the opening day of flat creek. The fish weighed 4.25 pounds and was somewhere around 22 inches. This was the biggest of the day but we did stick a number of other good fish in addition to this one.

Check out this pig my buddy caught... It was 27 inches long and ate a big foam dry fly in a nice little Wyoming river. He caught this same fish back in march but it wasn't nearly as fat and healthy.

Fishing has been very hot recently. The South Fork is on fire but very crowded, the Green has been fishing well very early but has been heating up later in the day, and the Snake has been excellent for lots of smaller fish with a few large fish mixed in. Yesterday I fished the south fork with Ryan Richardson and we had an excellent day with very large numbers of good fish being caught on both dries and nymphs in the riffles. Here are a few photos from that day. The other photo is of a father son double (Steve and Bradely Rowe) on the snake in the national park. The guys kept track that day and i think they landed something like 44 or 47 trout with most in the 8-12 inch range but a few around 14in and one about 16in.

Fishing has been great recently. The Snake is fishing excellent on dry flies and the South Fork has fished well on nymphs early then dry flies later in the day. The Green has been alright recently but the water temps are getting pretty high later in the day. Fishing there has been shutting down usually around two in the afternoon but it can be good early. We've had a lot of yellow sallies, drakes, and PMDs around. The golden stones are just getting started and are coming on pretty heavily on the Snake.
I've been fortunate to have some really good clients recently. Lots of good fisherman and, even more importantly, good company. These pictures are of clients from the Green and South Fork this past week.

Dry Flies

The dry fly action has started off here in a big way. Both the South fork and the Green have started to fish very well and i've had a couple great days out there. The south fork and the green have lots of salmonflies, drakes, yellow sallies, and PMDs going of right now with nymph fishing being very good early in the day and the dry fly fishing improving as the day moves on. I've had some great recent trips... one on the lower SF with Trey and Zee, then one on the canyon of the south fork with Mark Weidner. Both days were great and fishing was excellent. I've spent the past few days fishing some big fish water with my buddy Greg. Fishing was relatively slow in terms of numbers but excellent in terms of size. I caught this 6.4lbs beauty on my first cast. Greg had an equally large fish take a swipe at his streamer right at the boat. There were lots of bugs around (grey drakes, yellow sallies, PMDs, Brown Drakes, and yellow drakes) and finally some rising fish. When this water drops just a little the fishing should get hot.

Fishing continues to improve in the area but it has come at a slower than expected rate. Its shocking to me how long it has taken for the water to start coming down but it does seem like it is finally coming down. Certain areas have been fishing really well but certain areas are still too high. It'll b e a little while before we're fishing the snake... the firehole is starting to get too warm... the green is still high but coming down rapidly... and the south fork is actually fishing very well. Most of the activity has been on big nymphs and streamers but we have started to see good bug activity and some rising fish in the past few days. The plus side of the high water is that fishing later this summer and into the fall will be fantastic! The fish we are catching are fat and healthy and this trend should continue through the year.

I had Michael Bateman out on a guide trip here on sunday. The fishing was decent... we fished streamers hard and also fished some nymphs like sanjuan worms and stoneflies throughout the day. The streamer fishing was interesting to say the least, we had many fish chase and follow the streamers but not too many of em ate. If the fish had been just a little more aggressive we would have had an exceptional day. We also spent some time nymphing and met with some success doing that. The bugs were pretty active and the fish should be starting to look up. Here's a picture of the biggest fish we landed on sunday.

The fishing around here has started to heat up. Some of the rivers that I can guide are starting to drop and clear. The green has been fishing well recently and the south fork has dropped and begun to fish well with both nymphs and streamers. Well some of the rivers have started to crest and drop in recent days. The weather has started to turn nice and we should be fishing some different rivers by the end of the week. The fish are starting to get more active and the dry fly fishing is starting to get hot. Hopefully runoff will be over soon.

Big Rivers

Runoff has hit hard in the area in the past week. The temps have warmed a little and its been raining a ton. The rain has been a bit of a blessing in certain ways though because its helped to melt alot of snow and accelerate our runoff. Even with the huge runoff we've been able to find some good fishing. The Firehole in yellowstone has been on fire... sorry, no pun intended. Fishing subsurface early in the day has been very effective and in the afternoons we've been getting some really good hatches of caddis and white millers that have provided some great dry fly fishing. I was just on the firehole the other day with a dad and his two sons, none of whom had ever fly fished, and we did very well. The guys learned quickly, they listened well, and they caught lots of fish. The scenery is also very interesting on the firehole because you're actually fishing in the middle of a geyser basin with geysers going off within twenty yards of you.
When i haven't been fishing the Firehole I've been fishing local lakes and beating up on some of the lake trout that are in extremely shallow water this time of year. These lakes are beautiful and those lake trout are delicious in fish tacos.

June is finally here

Well this has been a wet spring for us. The rivers of the area stayed amazingly clear late into the season and the fishing was fantastic but now runoff has started and the fishing in many areas has slowed. For guiding this time of year i'll usually do the South Fork over in idaho, the Firehole in yellowstone, or fish some of the lakes in the area. The fishing in these areas can be really good during runoff and the South Fork can be incredible if the releases out of the dam don't get too high. The good news for fishermen out here is that the recent rains have started to melt the snowpack much quicker and should cause the rivers to clear earlier than expected. When the rivers do clear the fishing is gonna be really good and the fish should be very fat and healthy with all this water around.
As for my recent fishing... i've been fishing the south fork often and its been very good nymphing the soft inside corners and i've been doing alot of driving and fishing some new lakes in the area. Learning to be a really good lake fly fisherman is something that takes alot of practice and time on the water. Most fly fishermen around here don't fish lakes so by figuring out the lakes in the area i've been able to open up unpressured water to myself and any buddies who want to go fishing with me. It doens't hurt that lakes in this area tend to hold some real monster trout. I'll keep you guys posted and shoot me an email if you're gonna be in the area anytime soon and i'll let ya know about the fishing. Oh, here are a few belize pics just for fun.

Still fishing the snake

Here are a few pictures from friday on the snake with Scott Moore. The fishing was a little slow for most of the day but we were able to get back into a special spot and catch a couple really nice fish toward the end of the day on some small streamers. I'm going up to the firehole with some clients tomorrow and i'll try to let you know how that goes. I hear the fishing has been excellent up there.

New Store Location!

Well we got some big news this week... the fishing shop has moved from the old location in jack dennis sports on the town square to around the corner across the street from Sweetwater restaurant! The actual address of the store is 70 S. King Street, Jackson, Wy 83001. Its a really neat log building that will look really nice once it gets turned into a fly shop. Just thought i'd let you guys know just so you don't accidentally walk into the old store looking for the guide service. Shoot me an email if you need directions.

Green River

Went down to the green again today with greg. this was actually my first time fishing since i got back in the states. The fishign today was pretty good. Not alot of big fish landed but quite a few fish and some very lively fish, jumping all over the place when hooked. I'll keep this pretty short right now because i'm tired but i'll try to post again soon. I have a trip up to the firehole on monday and may have a trip this weekend so i'll try to keep up with the fishing reports.

Back to Wyoming

Well i've finally made it back to wyoming and its good to be back. The weather has been pretty aweful but honestly, its nice to have some cool weather for a change. Most of my week has been spent moving and substitute teaching but i did finally get to fish with some clients down on the green on saturday. The weather was really bad and the fishing was tough but these guys stuck it out and managed to catch some fish in tough conditions. I think if the weather would have stayed a little more stable we would have really beat up on some fish but hopefully it won't be the last time i get to fish with these guys.
I'm trying to get some belize pics up as soon as possible but i'm waiting for them to come in from some of the other guys that were on the trip. I've got some pics but i lost alot of the good ones when my camera took an unexpected swim in the ocean. I'll try and get a slideshow together but it may take awhile.

Honduras

Right now i'm down in Roatan, Honduras with my family. Fishing here has been ok but this leg of my trip has been mostly spending time with my family and not much fishing time. We have been seeing permit though and we have caught some bonefish. The Belize part of my trip was pretty tough fishing but i'll put a post up about that when i get back to Jackson here on May 16th. The fishing in jackson has apparently been pretty good even though the weather has been pretty nasty... I hear the skiing is still excellent there. This should push back our run-off which should make for some excellent summer fishing. I can tell ya i'll be itching to do some trout fishing when i get back to the states though so i hope it doesn't stay winter for too long. I"ll be putting up more posts and pictures here soon so keep an eye to the site and keep your fingers crossed that summer arrives in jackson soon.

Here's a report i put up on the jack dennis website a few days ago. Its just a summary of some jackson area fishing reports.

The new snow and cloudy weather this past week made fishing very difficult. If you could stand wading in a snowstorm you could pick up a few fish but most residents in the valley spent their time skiing. This week has been a different story, with some very warm temperatures and nice sunny days in the valley. Fishing on the Snake has been fantastic from about 11am till 4pm with hatches of midges and good nymphing to be had. If you can fish a streamer slow and deep you can pick up some really nice fish anytime of day on the snake. There's been some great fishing up near Jackson Lake Dam for some nice cutties and lots of 18-20in lake trout that have come down through the dam into the river. The South Fork and Henry's fork in Idaho have been fishing well with both nymphs and streamers. Its no longer winter over there and we're fulling into spring fishing. The fish in both those rivers are starting to wake up and becoming more active as the rainbow spawn approaches. Down in the pinedale region the fishing is still slow but the rewards can be very large. You can't expect to catch a lot of fish down there this time of year but if you streamer fish hard or throw some big nymphs you can be rewarded with a big tug.
With our low snowpack this year we're going to have a nice and early season with some great fishing coming in June and early July. This will be a nice change from the past few years when we had to wait until mid July to start fishing many of our favorite rivers. I've just got one last business plug... we are running a spring special this year where we're only charging $350 for a full day on the Snake, that's down from the summer rate of $475 so its a pretty significant saving for a good fishing day. Keep your eyes on the weather forecast for a warm sunny day and let Bruce know if you're interested in going fishing. I personally will be heading to Honduras for a month of fishing here but i'll be back in mid-May and i'll be ready to do some trout fishing when i do get back. I hope everyone has a good spring, wherever you spend the spring, and I hope you spend some time fishing this spring because it can be some of the best fishing of the year.

Post St. Patty's South Fork

Just fished the south fork for a day on thursday. We got on the river by about 11am and were met with some pretty poor weather conditions. It was cold and windy for most of the day which made the fishing pretty poor. Nymphing was the name of the game and when the sun came out later in the day our fishing did pickup a little. Some buddies of mine went over to fish the Henry's Fork and met with pretty similar results to us. One of the guys did get a 21.5 inch brown that made the day though. With the current snowpack and weather conditions fishing should really be picking up here soon. We're probably gonna have a very early season with june being exceptional. I look forward to seeing you out here

Spring Fishing

I spent Thursday and Friday of this week digging my boat out and taking a fishing trip with my buddies the VanGilders. It was great to be back in the boat again. The fishing was good, the weather was great, and i can't explain how much i missed floating the rivers. I also ran into my buddy Marty, who i hadn't seen since his new zealand trip, on the river. It was great to catch up with marty and hear about how his new zealand trip went. Most of the fish we caught were rainbows with a couple nice browns. It was almost entirely nymph fishing as the water temp is still very cold. The best flies were san juan worms and small BWO nymphs. Its good to be fishing again and i'll try and have some more fishing reports in the near future.

Its March

Well spring is starting to show in the valley. the temps have been very high recently and there has been alot of snowmelt. The snake has started to fish very well midday but as of right now the skiing is still good at upper elevations. Based on the current snowpack i would expect fishing to start to pickup in late may and really start to come into its own in June. I'll be fishing this wednesday and thursday so i should have some new pics from the trip to post later this week.

Our snow is pretty bad right now. we haven't had this little snow since 1976 and we're not sure what the weather is gonna be like coming up soon. in the meantime i've been thinking alot about fishing... if the snow doesn't come soon i'll be taking more fishing trips than normal for the winter. in the meantime here are a few extra photos from last year. enjoy it

Just got a copy of this picture from a buddy. this was a big brown i caught on the upper south fork two septembers ago. it was 26.5 inches, which isn't my longest US fish, but i think its my heaviest. Never did get a weight though... it figures that the one time i forget my weigh net i catch a huge fish. that's just the way it goes

Change of Venue

Well things with the guide service will be a little different next year. we have changed our storefront location and will no longer be in the store downtown. we're unsure where our exact location for next year will be but we're pretty excited to open a store that is entirely geared toward fly fishing. If anybody does decide to book a trip next summer just shoot me an email or give me a call and i'll be able to give you the updates on where the shop is located and how we should book a trip.
Aside from the change of location there isn't much new in terms of fishing going on here. some mackinaw trout fishing the time of year (great eating!) but we've geared mostly toward skiing this time of year. In the meantime i'll try and post some random fishing pictures for the heck of it.

just got back tonight from my trip to baja with sam and greg. The fishing was amazing! not alot of big roosters around but we got lots of em and i was lucky enough to get a real nice one on the last day of the trip. we caught lots of roosters, jack crevalle, pompano, ladyfish, and needlefish from the shore. in addition we had three days in pangas catching some gorgeous dorado and skipjack tuna. these tropical saltwater fish are just amazingly strong... they pull just a little harder than our cutties in the snake. i'll get a gallery with picks going here shortly but here are a few for right now. its good to be home

Well hurricane Rick has delayed our trip to Baja by four days. now we'll be there from oct 23rd till nov 12th. oh well... sometimes you just have to take what mother nature gives you. In the mentime i've been spending my time fishing and climbing down in colorado. did get one pic from my friend Sam Bacon, of a fish he caught in colorado... probably 7-9lbs or so...

fishing is still generally very good with occasional off days definitely mixed in. the fishing can be very weather dependent and some days are just better for watching football than for fishing. when the weather is good, however, the fishing can be fantastic. At this point I think my guide season may be over, but from here i'm gonna head down to boulder to see the family and then i fly out to Baja on october 20th.
I'd like to thank all my clients from this year... it was a wonderful year and really one of my most enjoyable guide years yet. Thanks again and i hope to see many of you in years to come.
Oh also... continue to pay attention to the blog and i'll continue to post on the late season fishing and try and get up some pics from the baja trip

the cold weather has turned the fishing on recently especially for the brown trout. dry flies are still fishing during midday but nymphs and streamers are starting to pick up. we are starting to see some bigger fish consistently now.

well One-Fly is finally over. it was a good tourney but i'm glad its finally over. fishing since then has been very good with excellent dry fly fishing on stoneflies, mahogany duns, baetis, and drakes. we did get a big 21.5 inch brown on the snake today to eat a large royal wulff. that was kinda the highlight fish of the week. hopefully i'll have some more big fish pics to post soon

Fishing continues to be great on both the Snake and the South Fork. The Green could be very good on cloudy days but the water is very low and its very difficult to float. Dry flies have been the name of the game recently with both big stonefly/grasshopper patterns and small mayfly imitations working. I'll try and get some photos more photos uploaded soon

i've been guiding on the snake and south fork alot recently. both have been very good with the exception of one day on the snake when the water was a little blown out. today we floated in the national park and had a spectacular day with lots of fish in the 12-16 inch range and a few fish were hooked that were larger

I've been splitting my time between the Green and the Snake these days. Both are fishing very well. The snake has amazing numbers of fish right now but many of the big fish are still in the tribs. its been great for beginners. I did see one of the biggest browns i have ever seen in the snake this week though. It hit a client's spinner and got off right at the boat. The Green has been good early in the day with grey drakes and PMDs coming off. I was down there today with Ryan Richardson and we did very well with some really good small dry fly fishing.

fished the green today with the van gilder brothers. the fishing was very good with excellent dry fly fishing early and some good streamer fishing. there was a lull midday but the overall fish size was good.

Fished with the Betaneur family in the Snake river canyon today. we didn't get anything very large but the boys did keep track of numbers and we ended up landing 37 fish in a short day.

The End of Runoff

Fishing has become very good in the past few weeks. The Pinedale area has been fishing very well, the Snake is finally starting to clear and fish, and the South Fork is starting to drop again. I've been on the Green for the past few days with clients and the fishing has been good. There have been alot of boats down there recently but that pressure should start to spread out here shortly.

I spent two days fishing with Tom and Sam this weekend. We fished both llakes and rivers during this time and did pretty well overall. The lake was pretty slow but the fish we did catch were pretty large. The river that we fished was still clear and was actually quite cold. The water temp was 38 in the morning but rose to 51 in the afternoon. the fish were still held up in their winter holes and were only receptive to slow nymphing.

The fishing has been great recently with both the snake and the green fishing very well. Some big fish are coming out of both rivers but with the warm nighttime temps and all the rain we've been getting the rivers may not stay fishable for long. We might have up to a week before the rivers become unfishable but i'll be sure to post once runoff gets underway.

4/22: Headed south for a day with Greg VanGilder of New Spool Productions fame (www.newspoolproductions.com). If you've never checked these guys out you should give them a closer look. The fishing was fair to say the best. We spent the day nymphing riffles in the gale force winds that are relatively common in this part of wyoming. We found a number of smaller rainbows in the riffles but only found one nice sized rainbow the entire day. It was a good day to relax and enjoy the sun and a few cold beverages before some nasty weather roles through the area.

4/18 - 4/19: Tom Getz, Brad VanGilder, and I spent the weekend enjoying some gorgeous weather and some good fishing outside the valley. The weather was sunny and in the upper 60's and low 70's for both saturday and sunday. The fishing was good on both days with the mornings and evenings being better than midday. We did get some limited dry fly action on small baetis patterns but for the most part we spent our time nymphing the riffles and some of the slow seams. We fished many different patterns but the most successful seemed to be small baetis patterns and san juan worms fished deep. Most fish were average in size but Tom did get one 23" brownie toward the end of the day sunday. I was great to get out of the valley and finally have some good summer weather.

Springtime on the Snake

4/17: Greg VanGilder and I spent an afternoon floating the Snake from Wilson to South Park today. The fishing was great on streamers throughout the day with a number of nice fish in the 12-18'' range being hooked and landed. Dry flies were also fishing well early on in the float. We fished gnats and small renegade patterns to small pods of rising fish, primarily during the first few hours of the trip. These pods of fish were easy to catch and would usually take on the first or second drift. All in all it was a great spring day with excellent weather and some great early season fishing.
