11/15/12

Cold winter weather is finally setting in here. Lots of cloudy, snowing days but the sunny days are still fishing really well. No more dry fly action at this point, its all sub-surface with nymphs or streamers. The mackinaw fishing has been pretty good in Jackson lake with the macks moving in shallow with the cold temps. Here are some pictures from our guides trip a few weeks ago. It was a great trip with tons of pictures so I'm just starting to get them sorted.

11/1/12

I've had to accept that between work and taking classes I'm not going to have nearly as much time to post reports as I once did. I do, however, have lots of good pictures to put up here in the next week or so. The fishing has been incredible and I've spent lots of quality fishing time with some good friends over the past month. These pictures are from a trip Weldon and I took up to the Henry's fork back in October. Weldon and I met up with Jeff Currier, Josh Gallivan, Granny, and our good friend from out of town, Evan Schwanfelder. Schwany and I once worked in the fly shop together and it had been many years since we'd fished together. We had great hatches and some decent streamer fishing. It was a great trip and the nights at the Trouthunter were especially memorable.

9/15

Fishing has been great with fall conditions beginning to set in. These photos are from two weekends ago, one is of a 4.5lb rainbow I was able to nymph up and the other is of a 21inch brown that ate a hopper even though it was sipping tricos. I did also guide this past weekend for the One Fly tournament. The fishing on the snake was pretty good, but not as good as it had been the past week or so. Lots of pressure leading up to One Fly I guess. I'll be fishing again tomorrow with a buddy so hopefully I'll have more fishing to post on in the near future.

8/28

I'll be the first to admit that I've been terrible about keeping my blog updated this year. Now that I'm working with the school district again and have some more time I'll hopefully be able to post a little more frequently. The Snake has been excellent as of recent with perfect flows and great dry fly fishing. The South Fork, on the other hand, has been pretty fickle. I don't know what's happened to that river this year but its been interesting. The nymphing is great and there asre still plenty of fish but the dry fly fishing has been spotty at best. I'll let you know how some of the other rivers are fishing now that I'll have some time to fish on my own. Here are a few pictures from the past couple weeks of fishing.

I'm sorry for my terrible lack of postings recently, the fishing has just been too good to take a break from. Everything in the area is fishing well. The south fork has some great hatches going on, the green still has plenty of water, and the Snake has been fishing great with many of the bigger fish starting to drop out of the tribs and ending up in the main river. The recent thunderstorms have really helped our water situation and hopefully they won't have to bump the flows for irrigation reasons later in the year. Here are a few pictures from some recent fishing trips. On is of a 22inch rainbow I caught while fishing with my dad in colorado, one is of an 18 inch cutty that Jay Brunker pulled out of the snake on a recent trip, and one is of a 24inch cutty I caught on a local pond just the other day. I'm pretty excited to have caught that fish. It was all sight fishing, the take was beautiful, and best of all it ate a dry fly on 2x tippet which made the fight nice and easy.

6/21/12

Fishing is getting hot up here. Nymphing and streamer fishing has been excellent with some dry fly action starting to pickup. I think the dry fly fishing is really gonna pop here in about a week. The fish are starting to move shallow in the riffles and move up in the water column to feed on nymphs. Here are a few pictures from a recent lake trip and monday's guide trip in the south fork canyon. The biggest fish in the pictures is a 21 inch brown that I'm convinced we caught about two weeks ago.

Fishing has been excellent recently. The south fork has been fishing well with nymphs and streamers but the water will need to warm-up a few more degrees before the dry fly fishing picks up. The Green was fishing but the warm weather has caused the flows to jump up and the river to blow out. The mountains in the area are losing their snow quickly and I suspect that the Green and even the Snake will start to fish here in the next few weeks.

Fishing is Picking Up!

The fishing in this area has really started to turn on in the past week or so. Many rivers are still high with runoff but the snow is disappearing quickly and the runoff this year has been exceptionally tame. The South fork is clear and fishing well with relatively low flows and good hatches starting to come off. Its still mostly a nymph and streamer game but the dry fly action is right around the corner. Yellowstone opens this weekend and should be fishing very well, I actually have a guide trip there this Saturday so I'll let you know how it goes. The Green and Snake are still high but I would expect them to clear far earlier than normal. I took a fishing road trip with some buddies this weekend and found some excellent fishing. There were more boats out than I think I've ever seen on this river but the fishing was still very productive. The fishing was pretty much all nymphing with big flies and heavy tippet. Its nice to be able to nymph with 1X and 2X even when the water is crystal clear. We did catch a few fish on streamers but that action was sporadic at best. Overall it was a great weekend spent camping with some good friends in beautiful weather. I hope you enjoy some of the pictures!

A big thanks to everyone who has posted on trip advisor for me. Those reviews are greatly appreciated. Runoff has started in the area with many of the freestone streams being blow out. Given the current conditions I would expect fishing to really pickup in the area by mid June. For the time being the fishing has been hit or miss with some big fish being caught but not huge numbers of fish. I have also been fishing Jackson Lake however, and have caught excellent numbers of lake trout there. These fish are very invasive and are fantastic to eat.

Trip Advisor

Hello everyone. I have a small request of you if you've ever gone on a guide trip with me before. It would be extremely helpful to me if you could write a positive review for my guide service on trip advisor. This doesn't take much time and any review is helpful. If you do want to write a review, you can find a quick link to trip advisor on the lower right side of my blog. Thanks for your help!

I spent the weekend fishing locally. The Snake fished very well with fish eating both streamers and nymphs. My buddy actually landed what is probably the largest cutty I've ever seen out of the Snake. This fish was around 21 inches, maybe a little bigger if you ask him, and was caught sight nymphing a shallow riffle. The Green did not fish nearly as well, the water was cold and off-color. I did catch one nice 20.5 inch brown on a streamer but that was really the only action we had on the day. It was still nice to be getting out on the river with some buddies again.

Spring Break Fishing

We just recently finished up spring break here in Wyoming and I had some awesome fishing. I spent the first few days of my break fishing my way down to Denver. Saturday was one of the most amazing fishing days I’ve ever had, between the three of us we landed well over 50 fish. That is very rare to say, but I don’t think we went more than 3 minutes without hooking up with a fish. You know it’s gonna be a great day when you land a 23 inch, 5.25lb brown as your third fish of the day. I tried to keep track of my fish but lost count after 17 in the first 2hrs. It was a truly amazing day and I hope that it’s just the beginning of an epic season. Oh, Sunday was pretty good fishing too. Lots of fish caught and a number of doubles. The one double picture I have posted is actually of my dad holding a 21 inch fish and a 17 inch fish. Not a bad double, but the picture doesn’t do it justice.

The second week of my spring break was spent down in Mexico, spending some time with the girlfriend and getting a day of tarpon fishing in. The fishing wasn’t great, it was a little early in the season but a few of the big tarpon were around. I only caught a few smaller tarpon and missed a few others, but I’m excited to go back. Overall the trip was great and the fishing was a lot of fun.

Spring Fishing

I've had some absolutely amazing spring fishing this year! We just finished up our spring break out here and I caught some nice fish over the break. Here's a quick picture of a fish from a 3 acre pond down in Colorado. This fish ate a scud right at the boat and weighed in right at 6lbs. It was a great fight with the fish tailwalking around the pond. Not a bad fish to catch on my 28th birthday! I also spent some time fishing in Wyoming and in Mexico. Those pictures will be coming soon.

Change of Web Address and Shop Location....Again!

Well the Jack Dennis guide service email has changed once again and the shop will have a new location this summer. The new web address is www.jackdennisfishingtrips.com and the new location is to be determined. If you go to www.jackdennis.com nowadays it will redirect you to the Jack Dennis Sporting Goods website. I'll let everyone know the new shop location once everything gets sorted out this winter.
On a lighter note, the skiing here has been pretty epic as of recent. We've gotten pounded by a couple major storms and everything has filled in nicely. Hopefully, if you're a skier, you'll be able to make it out this year.

1/14/12

My girlfriend flew into town this weekend and I convinced her to go out and do some fishing with me. We took the dog and my buddy Greg with us and ended up having a really good day. It was nice and sunny but pretty darn windy when we got to the river. This made for tough casting conditions, but the fish were on the feed so all was good. We landed good numbers of decent sized fish, no real monsters, and got into some neat sight nymphing situations. Here are a few pictures from the trip; we had to get a little creative when hauling the boat out though. The ramp was too icy to back down so I had to hookup and old climbing rope to drag the boat up the ramp.
Right now we're getting one heck of a winter storm here in Jackson. The system has dumped 3 feet in less than 48hrs and is still going. That will probably turn off the fishing here but at least we've been getting in some good skiing. I'll try and report on the skiing again here before too long.

January Fishing?

Fishing in January is not something that we are accustomed to in Jackson, but with the lack of snow we've had this year a number of boat ramps are still open. Yesterday a couple buddies and I thought we'd skip the skiing and go fishing. The fishing turned out to be excellent even thought the weather was cloudy and cold. It was pretty much all nymph fishing but the fish were active and in great condition. One of the browns I caught actually jumped a couple of times which is pretty unusual in the middle of winter. Hopefully we get some more snow here but if we don't at least we'll have some good fishing.
